Autumn Road Safety

The College of Optometrists is encouraging drivers to make sure their vision is up to standard before getting behind the wheel of a car this autumn. Research conducted by the College shows 66% of British adults admit to experiencing blurred vision and 35% believe their vision has markedly deteriorated in the past two years. Here’s what they say you can do about it…

  • The glare of low-lying sun on icy roads can cause difficulty for drivers, so make sure your windscreen is clean, both inside and out.
  • It’s useful to have a pair of sunglasses in the car to help with the glare from the sun. If you are buying sunglasses, make sure you invest in eyewear that complies with the safety standard BS EN ISO 12312-1:2013 or that carry a CE mark.  If you need glasses, prescription sunglasses are also available.
  • It can be difficult to see when driving during the long, dark nights of winter so it’s easy to understand why more accidents happen at night. Firstly if your optometrist has recommend you wear glasses to drive, ensure you use them. If they are more than two years old or if you are due a sight test, make sure you go to ensure you have the best possible vision. 
  • In winter, you may have more difficulty seeing clearly. This is because your pupils are larger in the dark than in the daylight. Your depth of field decreases when pupils are large and this means you notice blurriness more. This has two effects:  firstly, you may find that your vision without spectacles is OK during day, but not at night, so you need to wear spectacles at night. Secondly, you will notice if your spectacles are not quite right for you more in the dark than in daylight, as small changes in your vision become more noticeable at night. It is therefore particularly important in winter to make sure that your spectacles are up to date to make sure that things are as clear as they can be.

We’re Back…

Although we’ve continued to deal with urgent issues for patients throughout the lockdown, we’re pleased to say we’re properly back and our practice on York Road is open again.

Of course, nothing is more important to us at Pagan & McQuade than the health and safety of our patients. In response to the overwhelming need to try to prevent the spread of COVID-19, we are taking stringent measures to help protect our community.

We have outlined these measure below, but if you have any questions or comments please just conatct us.

  • We have a ‘locked door’ policy to limit the amount of people in-store. All consultations are ‘by appointment’ only and we ask that when you arrive you knock on our front door to let us know you are there. There may be some delays and you might be asked to wait outside until it is safe to enter.
  • We have removed our sofas to create socially distanced seating around the practice. You will be escorted to an available chair.
  • We offer hand sanitiser to all visitors, which you can use upon entering. We will also offer you a free face mask if you do not have one.
  • We have a perspex screen at reception and ask customers to stand back from the desk so that they are fully protected. There are 2m floor markings in this area.
  • Please come on your own, where possible.
  • We have new staff uniforms which are washed at the end of each day in a 60 degree wash.
  • We wear the recommended PPE appropriate to the procedure carried out and change our PPE after each consultation.
  • We use a PxUVC machine to clean and disinfect frames once they have been tried on. The machine is also used to disinfect all small equipment, pens, rulers and screwdrivers etc.
  • To help limit the amount of customers attending, as well as the time you are in practice, Tony will phone you the day before to discuss your history and symptoms and will make sure you are well and free from covid symptoms.
  • Eye tests may seem a little different since we have made a major investment in a Daytona Optomap which can look more widely at the back of the eye. This gives us a more in-depth view and allows us to view areas which cannot be checked by the naked eye. This allows us to detect any changes as early as we possibly can.
  • We are seeing fewer people since more time is being given to appointment slots. This allows us time to clean furniture, surfaces and equipment.
  • We offer the option to have spectacles posted, although there is an extra postal charge for this. Contact lenses can also be posted.
  • Card payments are preferred.

A Message from Alcon

The following is a message from Alcon regarding the safety of contact lenses during the Covid 19 pandemic.

We would like to highlight recent evidence-based science to support you regarding the safety of contact lens wear during COVID-19.

Alcon and our industry partners and associations including EUROMCONTACT, the British Contact Lens Association (BCLA), add other locally relevant associations, firmly support the recent guidance from the Centre for Ocular Research & Education (CORE). This guidance is based on the recent Peer Review publication in Contact Lens and Anterior Eye (CLAE)1 which states:

  • There is currently no scientific evidence that contact lens wearers have an increased risk of contracting COVID-19 compared with glasses / spectacles wearers.
  • Thorough handwashing and drying are essential, as well as properly wearing and caring for contact lenses, ensuring good contact lens case hygiene, and regularly cleaning glasses / spectacles with soap and water. 
  • There is currently no scientific evidence to support rumors that everyday eyeglasses / spectacles offer protection against COVID-19.
  • Everyone should avoid touching their nose, mouth and eyes with unwashed hands, consistent with World Health Organization (WHO) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations.
  • Contact lens wearers who are ill should temporarily revert to wearing eyeglasses / spectacles

Corona Virus Pandemic (Covid-19) Update

Nothing is more important to us at Pagan & McQuade than the health and safety of our patients, and that of our team. 

In response to the overwhelming need to try to prevent the spread of Covid-19, we are taking stringent measures to help protect our community. By all indications we are in this for the long haul and getting back to ‘normal’ may take several months. It is important that you continue to receive excellent eye care and so we have put the following plan in place.

In General:

  • We are closely monitoring the health of our staff. This includes regular temperature checks and monitoring colleagues for symptoms of corona virus, including a new continuous cough. 
  • We ask patients exhibiting these same symptoms not to attend the practice. The up-to-date advice from the National Health Service is available at www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/ . 

Visiting Our Practice:

This optical practice is open for essential and urgent care only.

We can help if:

  • Your vision has suddenly changed or become blurry.
  • You have a painful or red eye.
  • You have been advised to attend this practice by NHS 111 or another healthcare professional for urgent care.
  • You have broken or lost your glasses and need a replacement pair to function.
  • You have a problem with your contact lenses.
  • Please contact us so we can assess how best to meet your needs.
  • Contact lens supply for existing patients will be done by post.
  • If you have glasses on order we will also be able to post these to you.
  • If you are worried about your eyes please phone us to discuss this. We may be able to answer your queries over the phone or video without you needing to come to us.
  • All collections and appointments will be assigned their own time slots so that individual patients are cared for one at a time. Please be sure to make your time slot since we will not be able to serve you if we have moved on to the next collection or appointment and we will need to re-arrange.
  • All staff will keep a social distance of at least two metres. All handles and surfaces will be disinfected and cleaned after each visit.  Hand sanitizer will be made available to all patients.
  • All frames have been disinfected. Once a frame has been tried on by a patient, we will set them aside and disinfect them before the next patient’s collection or appointment. 

Your Examination:

  • Our optometrist, Tony Sanders, will conduct any necessary examinations within the strict guidelines from the College of Optometrists and maintain social distancing where at all possible. Hand sanitizer is available for the use of both the patient and Tony.
  • After each appointment our optical assistants will disinfect all equipment. 

Home Visits:

  • For those patients who are uncomfortable visiting us at our practice, and for those social distancing or self-isolating, we will also be providing a spectacle delivery service. 
  • These can be organised by calling us on our main number. As you can appreciate, this service will not be provided to patients showing symptoms or who are in poor health. 
  • Some types of consultations and contact lens aftercare checks can be done over the phone. Please contact us for further details.
